Lebanon and Get Low, two Toronto Film Festival favorites, got picked up by Sony Picture Classics. Lebanon, the claustrophobic movie that takes place strictly in a tank, won at the Venice Film Festival and Get Low, the depression era flick starring Robert Duvall, garnered lots of praise. While Get Low was supposed to be a big hit, it unfortunately just got delayed to 2010 today. It doesn't really matter. Between The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Broken Embraces, An Education, and The White Ribbon, Sony Picture Classics should fare pretty well at the Oscars.
But Sony Picture Classics isn't the only studio vying for Oscars. Newmarket, a small independent studio, has bought the rights to Creation. Creation is a drama about Charles Darwin, played by Paul Bettany, and his girlfriend who is played by Jennifer Connelly. It should generate some controversy, especially with a December release, but nevertheless, the film has been gathering buzz for months now and Newmarket made the right decision.
